Everything, from the smallest to the greatest in life, starts with a foundation. The longevity and durability of this thing is dependent upon how it builds upon the foundation it received. This is an irrefutable point. It is a truth that everything in life and nature bears out. A creation can never be greater than its creator. We humans have a tough time with this one. We like doing our own thing and most of us are not too chumming with the idea of being beholden to rules or statutes. We don’t like restrictions, especially when it comes to the things we want most. The reality is that we don’t get to do anything we want, and we won’t receive everything we desire. There’s a masterplan that is always at work, and you and I don’t get to control it.
One of the most amazing verses is Jeremiah 29:11(NLT), where God tells His people, “For I know the plans I have for you…They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.” God is the author of the masterplan, and it incorporates the plan He has for each of our individual lives. He tells us in Ephesians 1:11 that we have received an inheritance, because we were predestined according to the purpose He has ordained, and He works EVERYTHING out according to the direction of His Will. This is an incredibly important piece of truth for us to comprehend and keep in the forefront of our minds.
God doesn’t miss or overlook details. In Genesis 2:18(NLT), He said,“It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper who is just right for him.” He then extracted a rib from Adam and made Eve. From one, He made two who would function as one. This is the way He sees a married couple. They are one in His eyes. He said in Genesis 2:24 that a man leaves his parents and is joined with his wife, and the two will be so united and intertwined that they become one person. As with many of God’s institutions, people are not reverencing His intention for marriage as they should, but this has absolutely no bearing on the truth that He established marriage according to His masterplan. If we’re not willing to honor this, the consequences are ours to bear. Most of us have witnessed many examples of these consequences in our modern times. Divorce rates are off the scale, but if we put Jesus Christ in the driver’s seat of our unions, we don’t have to add to that number.
Marriage was created by God for HIS purpose, and He is very concerned that we partner with a person who will help us fulfil it. This truth is an integral part of our foundation. It’s the beginning frame of mind that continually supercharges our efforts to cross path with the person we’ll ultimately call ‘wifey’ or ‘hubby’. Proverbs 14:12 says there’s a path before each person that seems right, but it ends in destruction. This allows us to know that a path that SEEMS right is not the path we should want to be on. We can apply this very same wisdom to Mr. or Mrs. Wrong. There is a person or relationship that seems right but ends in hiccups and train wrecks. You don’t want to be walking down the aisle, aiming to be Mr. and Mrs. Wrong. That’s not cute. We ought not to leave such an important layer on the foundation of our lives to chance.
We’d like to think that we’re creators and masterminds, but we can’t make air, and we can’t make the sun shine brightly every day. Through the Apostle Paul, God has provided the excellent way we should frame our thinking about keeping the foundation of our lives strong. In 1Corinthians 3:10, Paul said that God extended him the grace to be a WISE master builder, and he also warns that we must be careful not be a foolish one. We must be cautious about how we build. Faulty building material and cheap tools won’t cut it, especially when it comes to something as sacred as marriage. The love of Christ should govern our every step. So, if we’re not consulting God regarding how we fit into His plan and who best will help us do this, we could make a mistake that will change the trajectory of our lives traumatically. God doesn’t want this. He wants to help us align ourselves with His agenda so we’ll be blessed in life and happy in marriage.■
