We all know what it feels like when we want something so bad, we’d do just about anything to get it. You may stay on your knees all night and pray all day just to see a certain thing come to pass in your life.
In the Old Testament, Genesis 24, we can examine the record of Abraham seeking a wife for his son, Isaac. It was customary in those days that the father in the family would make such decisions for the children in his household, and we can see that Abraham was pretty adamant about who this woman would be. He wanted to ensure that his son had the best wife that could be found. He didn’t want Isaac to marry just any kind of woman, and he knew what kind of women were in his neighborhood, so to speak. They were the Canaanite girls, and in Abraham’s mind, a woman from his homeland would be more suitable for his son. So, Abraham charged his chief servant with the responsibility of finding a good woman for his son, and he would have to travel a great distance to scope her out.
Once he arrived in Abraham’s homeland, he stopped at a watering spot, so that everyone traveling with him and the camels could be refreshed. It was customary for young women to draw water during those times. This was done in service to her entire family. She would sometimes have to walk far distances with buckets of water, and this was no task for a lazy woman.
Abraham’s servant knew the importance of finding a special kind of woman, and he thought the watering spot could prove profitable to his quest. Genesis 24:12-14(NLT) tells us that he prayed “O LORD, God of my master, Abraham,” he prayed. “Please give me success today, and show unfailing love to my master, Abraham. See, I am standing here beside this spring, and the young women of the town are coming out to draw water. This is my request. I will ask one of them, ‘Please give me a drink from your jug.’ If she says, ‘Yes, have a drink, and I will water your camels, too!’—let her be the one you have selected as Isaac’s wife. This is how I will know that you have shown unfailing love to my master.””
I wonder how many men these days would pray such a prayer when looking for a quality woman to marry. How many would be committed to be guided by the Lord to the right woman for them? When it comes to getting married and finding a wife, not every woman is meant or cut out to be someone’s spouse. A woman that genuinely desires to partner in marriage will undertake the spiritual preparation necessary to do so. It’s this commitment to satisfy God’s standard that signals the heavens and everything beneath it that she is ready to partner with a Godly man.
This is the woman that goes out of her way to prioritize God in her life. She does so to such a degree that a good and Godly man will be able to spot her uniqueness from all the rest. The Christian walk can be very challenging. Heavenly Father wants every believer to be partnered with a person that will not injure their relationship with Him through Jesus Christ. He doesn’t want us partnered with a person that will harm us in any way. God’s Will is that we marry someone that will have our backs and help us move forward and upward in Christ. He tells us in Proverbs 27:17(NLT), “As iron sharpens iron, so a friend sharpens a friend.” The person that is right for us will keep us spiritually sharp so that we remain in a blessed place, and we will do the same for them.
God tells us in 2Corinthians 3:5(NLT), “Our qualification comes from God.” God is the One that gives us what we need for keen discernment and abilities. In the beginning of our endeavor to find the right person, you and I are not in a position to know exactly who this person is. Heavenly Father knows what is best for us, and we must seek His guidance continually. A woman that God has qualified has weeded out those characteristics that keep her from walking in God’s love. She allows the light of Christ to shine in her heart. She’s not looking for the man to be her everything, because she knows that only the Lord Jesus Christ can fill her cup. She sees marriage as God’s institution, a ministry that is to be reverenced and enjoyed.
A man of God that’s truly ready to partner would be able to recognize such a quality and unique woman. The love of God in her heart draws him like a magnet. Abraham’s servant was extremely wise in asking for God’s guidance, because this is an area too important to leave to chance.
Genesis 24:15-19(NLT) tells us, “15 Before he had finished praying, he saw a young woman named Rebekah coming out with her water jug on her shoulder. She was the daughter of Bethuel, who was the son of Abraham’s brother Nahor and his wife, Milcah. 16 Rebekah was very beautiful and old enough to be married, but she was still a virgin. She went down to the spring, filled her jug, and came up again.” 17 Running over to her, the servant said, “Please give me a little drink of water from your jug.” 18 “Yes, my lord,” she answered, “have a drink.” And she quickly lowered her jug from her shoulder and gave him a drink. 19 When she had given him a drink, she said, “I’ll draw water for your camels, too, until they have had enough to drink.”
The servant witnessed Rebekah’s diligence and willingness to serve. The Lord had led him to the right woman who was at the right place at the right time. God cannot fail. Trust Him and let Him help you find the right person. If He did it for Abraham’s servant, He’ll do it for you.■
