3John 1:2(NKJV) allows us to see that God desires for everyone to have an amazing life. This verse says, “Beloved, I wish above all things that you prosper and be in good health, even as your soul prospers.” God wants every aspect of our lives to flourish and to be blessed, and this includes relationships with the significant person in our lives. Most of us understand this, but we still struggle with finding someone that loves the Lord, and is loyal, loving, and compatible with us. And not only this, consider how devastating it is to think you’ve found the right one, and then things go horribly wrong? This is the absolute worst, and hardly anything is more disappointing.
God did not give us the ability to know what is in another person’s heart. They can be the most attractive person on the outside, and even play the part of someone that is caring and thoughtful, but the inside tells the real story. Time will always reveal a person’s true motive and the intents of their hearts. Time will reveal what they are really all about. So, it can’t be lost on us that sometimes the outside of a person doesn’t match at all what’s on the inside. When we start to place our hopes for a long-term relationship in someone like this, we end up getting hurt. It’s not unheard of in today’s dating environment that a person can go through this painful experience more than a few times.
After a while, having been hurt repeatedly, some of us develop an attitude and mindset that doesn’t serve us well. We become unsure and insecure in our own decision making. This leads to an approach of fear rather than faith. Whenever fear is operating, it’s going to attract individuals that are comfortable in it. This isn’t what we want, and it’s not what God wants for us.
In Genesis 1, God informs us of a few things about how He created the earth. Before He began, the earth was formless, without shape, and very dark. Verse 2 tells us that the Spirit of God hovered over the surface of the waters, and then something amazing happened. God spoke creation into being. Heavenly Father didn’t need Adam and Eve to help Him out with this. He created everything and then He created them and plopped them right down in the middle of paradise. All they needed to do was enjoy His provision, take care of it, and delight in the wonderful relationship He shared with them. This was not complicated.
God tells us in 2Corinthains 3:5 that we are not to think we’re so sufficient of ourselves that we don’t need Him for everything in life. He tells us that He is our sufficiency. He established this pattern from the very beginning with Adam and Eve. They were to lean totally on Him. He cosigns this in Proverbs 3:5-6, where He tells us to trust in Him with ALL our hearts, and do not depend on our own understanding. He tells us to seek HIS WILL in all we do, and HE will show us which path to take. Particularly in relationships, we must not deviate from His instructions. God doesn’t change and neither does His Word. Everything good that we need flows from Him, and when we get away from this very basic truth, we are going to be in trouble.
Without God’s divine guidance, we trap ourselves in fear. Without His guidance and instruction, crossing paths with a compatible partner is like finding a needle in a haystack. The major reason for this is because we are looking for the needle with foggy glasses, but God has perfect vision. He knows exactly who and where this special person is. This individual is going to help bring out the best in us and help us to pursue God’s purpose. We must never forget that God’s Will and purpose is most important to Him, therefore it must be most important to us. Nothing about us is a mistake, and everything about us was specifically appointed by God. We came into the earth at exactly the time He wanted.
Ephesians 1:11(NLT) tells us, “In Him also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestined according to the purpose of Him who works all things according to the counsel of His will,” Everything that Heavenly Father does has a purpose, and we were predestined for God’s purpose. We can be confident that when it comes to something as important as the person that will walk through life with us, God has a plan and purpose, and we must seek Him and not try to take matters into our own hands.
Not one detail slips by God. Instead of trying to maneuver this very important and emotional area of our lives, we must know that God has given us a strategy, and it’s to seek His Will. His confirmation that we’re on the right track will continually infuse us with faith, and we can then be confident that we’re with the right person. Most importantly, God’s confirmation will assure us that our choices are pleasing to Him, and nothing is more satisfying than pleasing God. Make a commitment to spend more time in prayer. Listen to the counsel of spiritually mature friends and make sure to keep these people in your life. Study God’s Word, because this is the only way you can grow in knowledge about Jesus Christ. These practices will help you stay on the right track. They will help you spiritually discern so that you make good decisions when it comes the person that is right for you.■
